TAFE QUEENSLAND EAST COAST STUDENT WINS GOLD AT PACKAGING DESIGN AWARDS!
TAFE Queensland East Coast graphic design student Annalisa Jeffery has won a Gold Award at the national Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards for her tinplate Tucca Box design with a beach, bush and backyard theme.
Her challenge was to create an innovative and distinctly Australian branding and packaging concept for a food company. Her winning design packaged several gourmet food items together as an all-in-one picnic box which can be grabbed on the go to take to a picnic, the beach or a BBQ.
The project took about three months to complete from researching tin options, getting print quotes to designing and mocking up the hypothetical products, and writing a ‘rationale’ submission for judging. “It took me ages to find the right tins for this. I was trawling the shops and bought about four before I got the right one,” Mrs Jeffery said. “In the end I got some promo tins from Barilla that were at Woollies and spray painted them silver,” she said.
The Judges felt Annalisa’s entry, Tucca Box, ticked all of the requirements of the brief and provided this statement: “It is an excellent concept that uses tinplate to deliver a premium product. It has obvious commercial viability and provides an emotional connection to the consumer – whether they are off to the beach, bush or their backyard. Overall it was a well thought out idea, a very well executed mock-up and detailed rationale.”
A mother of two juggling study, parenting and work commitments, Mrs Jeffery said she started re-touching wedding photography and making canvas prints before they became commonplace. “I’ve always dabbled in design and thought if I’m really serious about it, I need to learn the latest techniques and programs like In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop and Dreamweaver,” she said. “TAFE has been great with having the latest technology and also encouraged all of us to enter the Award – it was part of our major assessment.” TAFE Queensland East Coast entered 30 designs from first and second year students this year and there were six brief options for them to choose from.
The Awards are a national competition which this year attracted 450 entrants from universities, private colleges and TAFEs around the country. “We [TAFE Queensland East Coast] have won many awards at the Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards in the past,” Mrs Jeffery’s teacher Lyndal Chase said. “In 2012 we won one gold, two silvers and three bronze while in 2010 we won two gold and one silver. I think every win we have demonstrates the industry relevance of the course as graphic designers in the packaging industry judge the awards,” she said.
Annalisa’s prize includes a $500 cheque from the category sponsor The Canmakers Institute of Australia (CMIA), a signed certificate and a professional photograph of the entry for her folio. The winners name, institution and photography of entry will also be featured on the Southern Cross packaging Design website from.
A further three TAFE Queensland East Coast graphic design students won Commendations at the Awards. They will each receive a signed certificate and their name, institution and photograph of entry will be on the Southern Cross Packaging Design Awards Results website:
